〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Diego Brando
CHARACTER AGE: 20
SERIES: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run
CHRONOLOGY: Vol. 99 Ch. 76 aka "D4C Part 9" aka "The Part Where He Dies" aka this.
CLASS: Makes a wiggly hand motion while making an "ehhhh" sound. Neutral or Undecided since he could go either way, depending.
HOUSING: Random housing is fine.

BACKGROUND: Diego Brando is from Steel Ball Run, part 7 of the long running manga series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. After establishing the fact that parallel universes exist in canon, SBR begins a new cycle in what turns out to be an alternate universe and is set up to be the alternate of Phantom Blood, taking place in America during 1890-91. The most noticeable changes appear to be that vampires aren't really a thing and neither is the Ripple, the bullshit sun magic used to combat vampires. Instead, the Zeppelis are a family of doctors/executioners from Naples who practice the Spin...which is bullshit perfect rectangle magic, based off of this. Also, Funny Valentine is President of the United States instead of Benjamin Harrison, and he is using the Steel Ball Run cross country race in order to find the corpse parts of Jesus Christ scattered across the continental United States. Seriously. Valentine is also a stand user with the ability to go into other similar parallel universes and also toss people in them and pull people out of them, and it's through this mechanic that we learn that the world with the corpse parts (the main SBR world, in other words) is the "base" world, as the corpse existing there makes it unique from all the others. The universe in parts 1-6 would be considered its own "base", as the things that happen in parts 1 through 6 are quite different from what happens in parts 7 and 8. Basically, this means that Valentine can't show up in Phantom Blood because there's no other Valentine there for him. Diego Brando (who also goes by Dio as a nickname) is Dio Brando's counterpart and, like Johnny and Gyro, he may as well be considered a completely different person than his counterpart, despite the similarities.

Dario and his lover had a baby and, since they were too poor to afford a child, decided to bury him in a hole and leave him there. A bit later, it started to rain and Diego was washed into the river. His mother, feeling guilty, went back to him and rescued him, almost drowning herself and being abandoned by Dario in the process. Fortunately, the two of them are found by a farm worker and are taken in by him to the farm he works at. Unfortunately, their life of poverty doesn't improve a bit, and it's implied that his mother is kept on the lower working rung because she has Single Unwed Mother Cooties and this is Victorian England.

Still, they got by. Diego was taking care of the horses by the time he was five and he had an almost supernatural way of calming down even the most untameable horses. Diego was a sweet child, always keeping his mother's best interests and comfort in mind. One day, the owner of the farm was trying to get sexual favors out of Diego's mother, but she refused, worried about what Diego would think of her. The farm owned didn't take very kindly to that and passive-aggressively punctured a large hole in their soup cups so they wouldn't be able to eat until they could buy new ones. Not wanting Diego to go hungry, she had him pour hot stew into her bare hand so she could feed him that way. While it was a very noble thing of her to do and it taught Diego to never let anyone take his dignity away, no matter how poor they are, she contracted tetanus from the burns and died when Diego was only six. Before she died, she told Diego to try working with and riding horses when he was older, as he was a genius when it came to handling them, and that's exactly what he did, becoming a famous jockey who used his understanding of horses to his advantage. However, Diego became very cold-hearted and bitter, angry at a society that would willingly abandon him and his mother just because his father abandoned them, and he will do anything in his quest to climb up the social ladder and gain power and status.

During Steel Ball Run, Johnny doesn't trust him at all because of all these shady rumors surrounding him and he almost fervently wants to believe that they're true. The audience never actually learns whether or not those rumors are true, but we do learn that Johnny isn't the most reliable narrator on the planet, as he has a past history with Diego. However, unlike Phantom Blood where Dio moves in with the Joestars and harasses Jonathan for seemingly no reason, Diego worked as a hot walker (someone who gives horses a cool down walk after a race) at the Joestar's home/horse track in England when he was thirteen. After Johnny's older brother Nicholas dies in an accident (that Diego had nothing to do with), his father's attention and favor focuses on Diego instead of Johnny, to the point where he would openly acknowledge that Diego was better in every way. Diego probably didn't realize that Johnny's father was shunning him and it became too much for Johnny when Diego beat him in an official race. Despite getting second place, Johnny throws the trophy in the garbage, and has grown to hate Diego ever since, even though it seems as if Diego is either completely oblivious to this or just doesn't care. He does show respect to Johnny at first, complimenting him and his racing and saying how nice it is that he's making this big comeback after being paralyzed from the waist down, but whether or not the niceness is genuine is anybody's guess.

During the race, Gyro Zeppeli beats him in the first round and he's held a grudge against him ever since, vowing to defeat him by the time the entire race is over. Later on, Diego is attacked by Dr. Ferdinand, a bounty hunter sent to gather the corpse parts of Jesus Christ for President Valentine who turns Diego into a dinosaur with his stand Scary Monsters and has him attack Johnny and Gyro. Dr. Ferdinand is eventually defeated, but before the two of them make off with both of the corpse's eyes, Diego takes the left eye for him and is now able to control his new power, gaining the stand Scary Monster. Even though Diego initially entered the race for money and fame, he decides to race Johnny and Gyro for the corpse parts, then teams up with Valentine to help him get the corpse parts from the two after they make him run his horse so hard it collapses (he doesn't really care about what the corpse does, only that the President thinks it's important), then he decides to assassinate Valentine to get the corpse himself, and then Hot Pants, a nun who's also trying to collect the parts for the Vatican, strong arms him into cooperating with her so they can both try to defeat Valentine. They work together very well and almost defeat him, until Diego is launched out of a train car and gets run over and killed. That's the last we see of him...until Valentine brings in a Diego from another world. Forget about him, though. He may as well be a different person entirely...

PERSONALITY:

Steel Ball Run is a great example of why it's important to not skip parts in JoJo. It's essentially a canon alternate universe where Jonathan Joestar, Baron Zeppili, and Dio Brando are replaced by Johnny, Gyro, and Diego and they're in a cross-country race. They're all pretty difference from their counterparts as well. Johnny is a tiny, paraplegic former jockey who doesn't act like a gentleman in the least. Instead of the Ripple, Gyro is a master of the Spin, a fighting technique that uses the principles of the Golden Ratio, and his outward attitude is much less serious. Diego, instead of being Johnny's complete opposite like Dio was to Jonathan, is actually similar to Johnny. They're both star jockeys (or in Johnny's case, he was), both view horse racing as something they base their identity around, they're both immature early twenty-somethings, they're both bitter and cynical about how society abandoned then (the only difference is that Johnny gets sad while Diego gets angry), and they're both ones who "hunger". Even Johnny admits this last part, saying that as long as Diego has his ambition and "hungers" to win, Gyro won't be able to beat him, since he'll do whatever it takes to win. For some reason, Johnny thinks he has more moral high ground than him, but the point is, Diego is more like Johnny than Johnny would like to think or admit.

"Andy, what are you getting at?" Well, I'm glad I'm assuming you asked that because, even though it's established that Johnny and Gyro are nothing like their Phantom Blood counterparts, when you look at Diego for the first time and you've read all the other parts and you know that Dio is literally Evil Incarnate, that doesn't matter. An almost visceral reaction happens when you see him. You think, "Fuck it's him, Dio. What the fuck. What's he going to do?!" You even see Diego do the "Kono Dio da" (I, Dio) phrase (it's his nickname, y'see) or talk about fate and you think "Fuck. Why are you here to ruin everything again, you asshole?? WHAT TRICKS DO YOU HAVE UP YOUR SLEEVE?"

And he...uses his understanding of horse body language and habits to calculate when a horse will slow down so he can speed up and come in first. It's hard to even call that cheating, since it doesn't hinder any of the other racers and, honestly, it's really clever. It's not even a stand ability, he's just that good at reading horses and, later on, other people. The round is over and you let Diego off the hook for now.

Later, Johnny thinks Diego one of the people trying to get the corpse parts from them. He keeps saying over and over that Diego is the lowest a human being can go, and talks about all these unconfirmed but very shady rumors about him. He encourages the audience to get into this mindset too, since the story is from his perspective. What's this? Why is Diego suddenly fine after that big fall? Is he going to trash talk them again?! Nope, he's in such a good mood that he tells a terrible joke and insists they stay the night in a nearby village. How about now? Why's he going over to Johnny? He just wants some coffee, man. Oh shit! Diego turned into a dinosaur! That's why he was acting suspicious!! He planned this, didn't he?! Nope, he was being used by Dr. Ferdinand and had no idea why he was suddenly acting so dinosaur-like but wanted to come off as totally normal and like nothing was wrong. Does he want the corpse to himself? No, but he sure does want Manhattan Island...

These false leads happen all the time until he gets run over by that train, and every single time, he does something that's pretty assholeish but not pure evil, or it turns out that he has no real idea with what's happening with Valentine's stand ability and has to figure that out, or he reacts to something like a person with normal human emotions instead of somebody who constantly has to keep a lid on their anger. His back story, when it's revealed, shows somebody who used to be a sweet and caring child who turned into a bitter and cynical man who will do anything to keep his pride, and if someone tries to destroy it, he'll take their sense of pride and cut it to pieces, and usually in pretty subtle ways. Walking his horse to the end of a race part is a good example of this. After his horse collapsed, Johnny and Gyro assumed that he'd have to retire from the race, but he didn't. Instead, he slowly walked his horse to the end of the race, placing 54th for that part. He doesn't look at the two of them, and it doesn't matter that he placed last. He won't let anybody get at his pride and he'll take other down a peg to prove it, and it pisses Gyro off immensely.

The thing that's most telling about Diego is how he uses his stand. After losing control to Dr. Ferdinand's stand ability, Diego never goes full dino ever again. Ever. At most, he goes for a hybrid form if he has to for combat, but most of the time he uses his stand in more creative and inventive ways. He could infect tons of people to also become dinosaurs and have them go after Johnny...but he doesn't. If he has subordinates working for him, they're left to their own devices while he provides dino support. It could be argued that he doesn't want to attract undue attention from the people observing the races, but who's honestly going to suspect that he's turning all these people into dinosaurs, aside from Valentine. But not once does Diego ever fully reject his humanity. There's still some shred of humanity in his cold and withered heart and he could probably ease up on thinking that society deserves to be kicked around by him if he's shown that not every single person is a giant tool who's only in it for themselves.

Don't get me wrong, though. Diego isn't a very nice person. However, he's hardly evil, or even a villain. He's a very bitter and angry young man whose only goals are riches, fame, and political power. There's a grain of truth to rumors but, while he may very well have married an 83-year-old woman for her money, saying he killed her could be going a little far. It's clear that the bulk of the rumors probably came from other rich folk looking down on him; like golf, horse racing seems to be in the realm of the upper classes, and they don't take too kindly to others coming from nowhere and being better than their friends or relatives. Since other rumors aren't really brought up again except for the one where he marrys that old lady, it's probably safe to assume that the rest of them is mostly guff made believable by how socially ruthless he can be and nothing more.

Diego is also very intelligent and, even if he wasn't exactly college educated, he seems to be very well read in biology and the natural sciences. He is also the first one to figure out not only what Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (or D4C) actually does or how it works, which is really confusing in its own right, but he's the first to figure out what happens when two doubles meet, how to send them back to their world without getting killed, and how President Valentine seems to keep coming back after all those fatal blows (he bring another Valentine in to take his place). That is pretty good for someone who was raised in barn, right? Though, with this talk of bringing people here from other worlds, he might be a little nervous...

POWER:

Scary Monster: Like some Araki powers, this is kind of vague and that's not until Diego starts experimenting with what he can do with it. Then it just gets weird. He can

-Become a dinosaur, a deinonychus or raptor to be specific. This works on a sliding scale, so most of the time he'll just bump it a little bit so he can use his dino senses. He's gotten very good at tracking people just by their scent.

-Turn living things into dinosaurs and control them. Self-explanitory

-Turn living things into dinosaur themed objects and turn objects into dinosaurs. So he can, let's say, turn somebody into a dino plushie or a lamp or turn the stitching of his gloves into small raptors so they can scout ahead of him. Yeah, I...told you it got weird.

Beast Master: A new power, this amps up his ability to relate to and calm horses and expands it to other land vertebrates. Since he's new to this, animals will just really like him. Also known as "Disney Princess Powers."

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:

[A video post is almost happening.

"Almost" being the case because this is the first time that Diego has picked up and played around with his communicator. He should probably be more enthused about this weird future tech but he...was only half listening to the explanation about how it works. Much too distracted at the time by...literally everything that's been happening to him in the past view hours. He doesn't want to ask anyone on the street for a refresher course either, but...he'll just play with parts of it right now and then put something out for the public and see how it goes.

Five minutes later, after getting used to pressing digital pictures to do literally anything on this thing in a general sense, a video finally pops up, revealing what would definitely be a familiar-looking face to a few unlucky people already here...frighteningly familiar. The same arched eyebrows, the same aggressively British pointed nose, same high cheekbones, same strong chin, same full lips, same long and semi-wavy blond hair...he's even wearing a jockey's helmet with the letters D I O on them. The only major difference is his eyes, which are a clear and icy blue, and they widen a bit in surprise because Diego just noticed the little window at the bottom right that shows what the video looks like. It's clear that this is the first time he's seen a video recording before period, much less one of himself.]

...My God. [Sporting an aggressively British accent, he brings the comm closer, giving everyone an accidental close up of his face in the process, especially his eyes, mouth and chin. Obviously he's enthralled by the concept of a video recording and, good Lord, is he actually smiling?] I, Dio....look incredible! This is amazing. [He was about to cancel this video a few seconds in because this was only a test, but fuck that! Everyone gets to have a good look at him now! In fact, he's so caught up in this that he almost forgot what he was initially going to ask, adding his question in almost as an afterthought.]

Oh! Right, quick question. I don't suppose anyone has come across any doubles while they were here, have they? It's important. [But not important enough to elaborate on at the moment. Now, if you'll excuse him, he's just discovered that you can take still photos on here from the video and has now stumbled upon the concept of selfies.

Nature is incredible.]
